Akin is essential, personalized, evidence-based care complementary to your OBGYN or Midwife. Our core team includes acupuncture, mental health, pelvic floor physical therapy, nutrition, infant feeding, and doula care.

Pregnancy.

  • An over 2,000 year old practice - combined with modern medicine - yields exceptional results. Acupuncture during pregnancy can help with nausea, pain, stress, anxiety, sleep, and has been shown to help induce labor at the end of pregnancy.

Have a breech baby? Studies have shown up to 50% improvement in fetal position with acupuncture.

  • At Akin, addressing your mental health is always top of mind. We’ve long believed in the power of working through our thoughts with kindness and compassion. If you’re seeking help in navigating the emotions that come up during pregnancy, we’ve got you.

  • Pregnancy can be a great time to see a pelvic floor physical therapist. A PFPT can help you connect deeper with your body. If you’re experiencing heaviness, pelvic and pubic pain, or back issues, working with our PT is a great place to begin. As you approach your due date, insight into birth positions, tips to minimize tearing, and suggestions for recovery can help you feel strong, supported, and set up with a plan for postpartum.

  • Integrative Midwifery is an incredible complement to care with your OB/GYN during pregnancy. Often, there are lots of things we wish we’d covered during appointments, but there’s just not enough time for everything. We’re here to answer any questions you have in a one off appointment, or provide personalized care and education throughout your pregnancy and into postpartum.

    Example support could include:

    Understanding Lab Tests and Ultrasounds

    Early Pregnancy Discomfort Advice

    Childbirth Preparation (Physically and Mentally)

    Preparation for Postpartum Recovery

  • Are you in your third trimester and want to prepare for feeding your baby? Our team is here to answer anything and everything. Whether you’re planning to breast, chest, bottle, or formula feed, we can help you get ready.

  • Supportive nutrition is an important part of feeling your best throughout pregnancy and beyond. But here’s the truth: Eating well isn’t always easy or simple. Whether you want to incorporate more nutrient-dense foods into your diet, are looking for guidance navigating morning sickness, you have diagnosed food allergies, gestational diabetes, or an autoimmune condition—our functional nutritionist can create a plan to fit your needs. Nutrition during pregnancy is about feeding your growing baby while making sure your own body doesn’t become depleted, and of course, incorporating healthy foods into your diet that help you feel strong and energized.

Akin FAQs // How it Works

  • Begin by selecting ‘Get Started’ on the nav bar or homepage where you’ll fill out some basic details + insurance information, and schedule a 15 minute care coordination call. Before this call, the Akin team will check your insurance eligibility.

In this call, you’ll go over your insurance coverage and everything you need to know about Akin. We’ll help take care of booking your first appointment(s) right there.

  • Based on the phase you’re in + your unique needs, you’ll get a personalized care plan. This plan updates as you move through phases. Your care coordinator is always there to help with questions on scheduling or billing with your Akin provider/team.

  • Personalized, collaborative care is how we believe healthcare should be. Our providers meet as a group regularly, chat all the time, and are well-versed in all aspects of reproductive healthcare and how each provider type can support our patients. This means that your care plan is unique to you, is designed to align with your goals and meet you where you are on your journey.. We never want you to tell your story over and over to every new provider you see. And because of our all angles approach, the things that normally might get missed don’t.

  • You can of course just see one provider. The whole team is here for you if and when you need them!

  • At Akin, everything we do is designed to be complementary to your care with your OBGYN/PCP/RE. We’re working to supplement and augment all of the great work you’re doing with them. And we’re really happy (and excited!) to share with them everything you’re doing with us. For the most part, the types of care we provide are not sufficient in the medical system — and we’re here to fill those gaps. Ultimately, our goal is to help you thrive.

  • Your first visit with us is always virtual. In this visit, we’ll get to know you and your goals, and you’ll learn how Akin works. Your follow-up visits can be either virtual or in person, depending on the provider you’re seeing. Typically, sessions like acupuncture or pelvic floor physical therapy are done in person, with some exceptions. Nutrition and mental health therapy can be done virtually.

  • In person visits take place in our provider’s clinics, or in your home. You decide! We have care providers across the Bay Area and Los Angeles, so you can find an in person location that works for you.

  • Currently, Akin is out of network for all insurances. To provide you with as affordable and accessible care as possible, we’re committed to working with you and your insurance provider and will file your claims for reimbursement. Most people are eligible for out-of-network coverage for some services.
